Driver's Education, or Parental Testing?

We have started parental taught Driver's Ed. in our house!
Three observations:

1. If you are to teach someone about driving, you better obey all of the rules, all of the time!

2. This is why we don't home school!
3. You finally have leverage against them!

Three examples:

1. While talking about yielding, signaling, or stopping, etc., you might just hear, "Like YOU don't do!" Or, "Dad never does that!" Oops!

2. During the teenage years, we encourage our children to look at things from all sides, and to ask questions. I believe this is a mistake we can not take back! You might hear, "Yes, but if we do (this, this, and this)...we would not even have to worry about (that!)" *sigh*

3. Getting a driver's license is very different than when we
got ours. You took Driver's Ed., and you took a driving test with a DMV officer. Now, parents can teach the Driver's Ed., and the student does not have to take the driving test if the parents sign for them! They must have a driver's permit for six months before they are eligible for a license. I guess in that time, it is assumed that they will get a lot of practice, and that parents will make sure they can drive! I told my son that he will have to pass his Dad's test! Now that I think about it, maybe the threat of a driver's test with an officer (who writes on his clip board every time you make a mistake!) might be a very good incentive to not mouth off, not debate every single thing in the book, and not act as though parents are crazy and don't know a single thing! Hmmm....

Yes, leverage is a very good thing. And then there is the truck he has shown to his friends and wants to drive....

Yes, I believe we will pass this test...I mean, he will pass the test!

  1. Looks like I missed some fun while I was gone.
    I've never heard of states just accepting the parents' word that their kids can drive. Taught 5/6 of my kids to drive, but they all had to pass the driving test!
    Still here praying!
    Romans 3:23-26 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

  2. Oh dear! I took HanK driving the other day around some deserted streets in our area. I was determined to be a "cool mom" and not stress out over every little thing. It was AWFUL! I will NOT be doing that again any time soon. Thankfully, she still has a while before drivers' ed, but I'm already thinking we may have to invest in one of the courses offered here in town unless BigJoel is around to teach her.
    I have so much more respect for my mother now! I had to get my hardship license at 15 to drive her to doctor's appts in Dallas. Can you imagine? No wonder she had heart problems!

  3. Continuing to lift up prayers!

    His oath, His covenant, and blood
    Support me in the whelming flood;
    When every earthly prop gives way,
    He then is all my Hope and Stay.
    On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
    All other ground is sinking sand.

  4. Hope you can get some sleep tonight!
    Know that I'm always here praying!

    When He shall come with trumpet sound,
    Oh, may I then in Him be found,
    Clothed in His righteousness alone,
    Faultless to stand before the throne!
    On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
    All other ground is sinking sand.
