RAK = Random Act of Kindness

Have you received an RAK lately? A Random Act of Kindness can happen anywhere, anytime, in person, through the mail, or through someone else. I have been blessed by an RAK several times. Sometimes I knew the giver, sometimes I didn't. One time, we received a huge amount of money in cash through the mail, and whoever it was that sent it wanted to make sure we didn't know--there were at least 3 different handwriting examples on the card and envelope! The note simply said, "Hope this helps." It came at a time that we were really stretched financially, so we felt extra special that someone blessed us in that way. I have thanked them many times through prayer and telling others; I do hope that they will be blessed as well. (If you are reading this, THANK YOU for helping us with such a generous gift!)

Have you bestowed an RAK on someone lately? I have a neat story that happened today...both in giving an RAK, and in receiving an unexpected RAK in return!

I went to Petco today to get cat and bird food. (Our little pets are on a certain diet to keep them healthy, so I make the trek every two months or so!) After driving for a while, then making the 10 minute stop at Petco, I decided to visit the Old Navy store that was close by. Actually, I went in looking for pants for my growing young man, but when I did not see any I wanted, I started looking at the clearance isle for me! I rarely buy clothes for myself, and rarely pay full price; in fact, the last things I bought were several sets of cheap scrubs for everyday wear. I am not happy about my body size and shape right now, so I did not want to buy a bunch of clothes. Wearing scrubs everyday will not do when on occasion, I have a few activities outside of grocery shopping, taxi driver, or Spanish class!

I found a few items and went to the check out. A lady behind me said to her preteen daughter, "We probably won't make it in time." I turned around and told her she could go in front of me because I was not in a hurry. After a little bit of prodding, she finally moved up in line. While waiting, she took out a coupon printed from her computer. She told me that it was for 30% off and she wanted to share it with me. I asked if it was good on sale items; she said yes. Then I said that the checker would probably take it anyway. She said it was a
multiple use coupon. Well, ok then! When another line opened up, she said, "He looks like a nice guy, lets go over there." LOL

As she was checking out, the checker told her she would have to get something else to receive the advertised price on what she was buying. Before she went back to get the item, she asked if she could let me use the 30% off coupon, and he said, "You sure can!" So, I stepped up and let the "nice guy" checker take care of my purchase. By the time I was finished, the lady returned to the line. I thanked her once again, and she said, "No, thank YOU!" Wow, what a nice thing to do, and what a great example she was to her daughter!

The sermon at church today touched on the verse in Acts,

"... remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said,
‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Acts 20:35b

I never would have thought that a little gesture of kindness would result in such a big blessing! I tried to give her a little extra time, she gave me an unexpected discount, and a feeling of good will toward others. RAK--give one today.

  1. I love RAKs. I love putting cans of soda in coworkers mailboxes. We have a Kudos system at work too where we leave nice anonymous works on a bulletin board. Someone then every once in a while takes a few down and puts them in the receivers mailbox with an actual Kudos granola bar. The best RAK ever was an envelop of money in my school mailbox when we had none. We also were given the use of a car when didn't have any way for my husband to get back and forth to work. It was given with no strings and for as long as we needed. It was such a blessing. Thanks for the reminder.

  3. That's great! The Lord always provides and blesses us more than we could ever bless anyone else!
    Always here praying!
Psalms 18:2-6 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me. In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

Isaiah 55:6-7 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
